Does anyone here cook for their dog?

dog poop bags

We just got our first dog and the previous owner gave us a large bag of dry dogfood. They recommended that we keep away from canned food because it makes the poop mushy.

So I went to the library to learn about dog food and I got many books, including a cookbook for dogs. Some books advise to stay away from “all breed”, “all purpose” dog food and other books that say any type of dry dog food will do.

I’m really confused now and wonder is there anyone out there that actually cooks for their dog? Once you start doing that, will the dog refuse regular dog food?
Note of interest: One book stated that cooking should only require an hour a week for the food prep. The main point I read that has me considering this is that a properly fed dog will not need so many vet appts. (healthier) and therefore end up saving you lots of money on vet bills.
For my breed of dog, it’s mainly brown rice & chicken.

What kind of dog is this?

dog poop bags

I have a 2 year old (approx) male dog that I got from the pound. I have looked everywhere…and I just can not find what breed he is. I have heard munster lander, border collie/bulldog mix, lab/springer spaniel mix, some kind of herding dog mix….it would be nice just to know if he is any specific breed or close to any specific breed or if he is just a mutt. If anyone knows…please enlighten me:

He is the black one.

Also…anyone know of any good (non dry) dietary food for dogs? It would be for my husky/malamute/something or other (she is from the SPCA too) who is obviously very overweight. I’ve heard of mixing broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peas, etc into a dog’s food or substituting half of what they are used to with veggies, but my dogs always get the liquid poops when I try it. I would rather go with something more natural like chicken and veggies as opposed to some $70.00 bag of dry dog food that vets recommend.

Also any ideas on how to get her to lose weight would be much appreciated. I have stopped her snacks almost 100%…and she will only eat willingly once a day. I try to feed her twice…but she throws her noce in the air and walks away when she doesn’t want the food. I honestly don’t know how she is so overweight (80 lbs now)…since both her and the black one take walks with me at least 4 times a day, go to dog parks, run around, and eat fairly light…
